MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — For the second day in a row, the number of confirmed cases of the COVID-19 Coronavirus in Wisconsin has increased by more than 100 cases.
The Department of Health Services confirmed 707 cases on Thursday. That’s up from 585 confirmed on Wednesday afternoon. Over 11,000 have been tested negative.
The numbers come one day after the start of Governor Tony Evers’ “Safer at Home” order mandating the closure of all non-essential businesses.
“We’ve learned how quickly this virus can spread,” Dr. Ryan Westergaard with the DHS Bureau of Infectious Diseases said Thursday. “[That] we have no control over. What we do have control over is how well it spreads person to person, and the way we control that is to keep people separated.”
DHS Secretary Designee Andrea Palm says computer modeling is showing what could happen if social distancing isn’t practiced.
“Our models show that if we continue without implementing ‘Safer at Home’, we could have 22,000 Wisconsites infected with COVID-19 by April 8th and between 440 and 1,500 deaths,” Palm said.
