SHIOCTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Wolf River is rising in Outagamie County.
Yellow caution tape blocks the entrance to a fishing dock at Barker Park just outside of Shiocton.
“So far, we have experienced flooding a little earlier than usual. However, it’s to be expected every year, so we’re just going to get through it the best we can,” said Chief Amber George, Shiocton Police Department.
Not far away in the Shiocton Village limits, a high water sign warns drivers to stay clear. Part of Elm Street is under water.
“That one is flooded over right now. That’s something that they’re working on to fix in the future, and then of course, the river is pretty flooded, said George.
“Normally, we’re just putting in actually all the way down there at the end. So, it’s crazy,” said Nicholas Thein, Shiocton.
Thein and his fishing partner Cole Conradt tested their luck on the Wolf River Monday morning.
Thein tells FOX 11 navigating a boat on the swollen stream can be tricky.
“Some of the current is cutting through the woods, because it’s high upriver. So you got a couple slack water points, you got to really know the river when you’re going up right now.”
As of Monday morning, the Wolf River level was still below the bottom of the Highway 54 Bridge. But Chief George tells FOX 11 that will likely change.
“It sounds like we’re going to probably crest around Thursday or so.”
George says the Fire Department will have sandbags available if needed.
She says because of the coronavirus situation, people are asked to stay away from the upcoming sturgeon run.
