GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Sturgeon are getting ready to spawn on the Wolf River. And while sturgeon, obviously, cannot get the COVID-19 Coronavirus, they’re not who Department of Natural Resources officials are concerned about–it’s the thousands of spectators who flock from across the state to witness the event.
DNR spokesperson Sarah Hoye says they’re not telling people to keep away from the event, but they are saying to practice social distancing.
“Please stay at a safe distance. Do not congregate, do not be on top of each other,” Hoye told WTAQ. “Getting outdoors is extremely beneficial, mentally and physically, but we can’t express enough how much we need the public to help with social distancing.”
Hoye says you should stay away from spawning if it’s not in your immediate local area.
“Stay within your community,” said Hoye. “If it’s not near your home, you shouldn’t go.
The sturgeon congregate on the river to spawn every year in early spring.
