ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Resch Center will continue to be the home of state volleyball and basketball tournaments for the next five years.
“We feel the welcome when we come to Green Bay. We truly feel a red carpet treatment,” said Stephanie Hauser, WIAA Executive Director.
PMI Entertainment Group and the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) announced their contract extension Wednesday.
The Resch Center will host high school state championships in girls volleyball, boys volleyball and girls basketball through March of 2030.
Hauser said, “We are excited about the five years. We feel that it is a commitment by all parties involved to say we love it here! We want to stay. We’re not looking to go anywhere else, we truly love it here!”
It was back in 2018 when the two organizations signed their current agreement that ends this year.
The girls state basketball tournament has been at the Resch since 2013. State girls volleyball has been at the Resch since 2002.
Since then, attendance has increased significantly at state girls volleyball tournament, setting a record for attendance with more than 25,500 spectators in 2024.
The girls state basketball tournament has averaged 36,500 spectators since moving to Green Bay.
Officials say the girls state basketball tournament infuses about $2.2 million to the Green Bay community and the state girls volleyball tournament has nearly a $1 million economic impact on the area.
Northeast Wisconsin takes pride in crowning champions. The teams that come to state at the Resch are proud of their accomplishments too.
And while the benefits of the state championship contract extension are about more than what happens on the courts, for the athletes, the experience is what it’s all about.
“Coming in here, you run into Lambeau and then you get here. It just screams title town and championships for all the kids that come. And for a lot of them, it’s the first time they’ve been to Green Bay, and so that makes it even more special. Green Bay means a lot to the people of Wisconsin,” added WIAA Assistant Director Melissa Gehring.
Crews are hard at work this week, getting the Resch Center ready for girls state volleyball which begins Thursday.
