FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Fond Du Lac Fire says thanks to a passing motorist, a resident was able to get out of a house fire safely.
Crews were dispatched to the home at 22 7th St. just before 1 p.m. Thursday.
Upon arrival, they found heavy flames extending out of two second-floor windows.
Firefighters learned a first-floor occupant had got out safely after a passing motorist banged on the door to wake the resident.
The fire was quickly extinguished and crews discovered a dog inside not breathing. Firefighters tried to revive the dog by administering CPR and oxygen but they were unsuccessful. A pet cat is still unaccounted for.
Fire Chief Peter O’Leary tells FOX this could have turned out much worse.
“The citizen who stopped and alerted the first floor resident of the fire is a hero. His selfless actions undoubtedly changed the outcome for the resident inside.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation and the home is uninhabitable.
