OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) — A new phone scammer is targeting residents in Oshkosh.
Oshkosh Police say someone is calling residents of the city, pretending to be a police officer.
“This male told the citizen they had a court order to appear in court and that they didn’t show up, and that they were advised to call a phone number,” Oshkosh Police Officer Kate Mann told WTAQ.
Dealing with court orders isn’t even the business of the police department. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office handles all court business in the county.
The scammer gives out a number: (920) 350-3795. If you call that number, it will go to a fake voicemail in which the scammer claims to be a Sergeant with the Oshkosh Police Department.
The scammer even appears to call from the Police Department’s non-emergency number using phone spoofing software. Mann says if you get such a call, contact police–the real police.
