SHEBOYGAN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The man accused of killing a Canadian tourist who was in town on a golfing trip was ordered to stand trial.
Luis Cruz-Burgos, 36, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide the Sept. 24 murder of Giovanni Robinson in Sheboygan Falls.
He was bound over for trial after testimony Wednesday at a preliminary hearing. His arraignment is set for Nov. 17, court records show.
According to the complaint, Robinson, who lived in Pennsylvania but was Canadian, had been out with three other men at a Sheboygan Falls bar celebrating a hole in one he got just hours earlier at Whistling Straits.
The criminal complaint details how Robinson and the others left the bar just after midnight and approached a delivery driver for a ride. Prosecutors said Cruz-Burgos was driving for DoorDash in the area.
The men, with Robinson, told police they tried to negotiate a ride back to their Kohler hotel, after not being able to get an Uber.
The complaint says police obtained surveillance that picked up audio of the interaction, with one man saying he was not going to give him $40 for five minutes of work.
Another man in the group told investigators Cruz-Burgos drove off, but then says the SUV doubled back.
He told police that’s when he heard a pop and then Robinson say “I’m dying.” The criminal complain indicated Robinson was shot once in the chest.
The criminal complaint indicates Cruz-Burgos first told police he saw the men walking but did not make contact with them.
He later admitted speaking to them about a ride, saying the men were calling him stupid and one of them flipped him off.
But prosecutors say Cruz-Burgos told police he did not shoot anyone.
Robinson’s wife gave birth to their first child, a baby girl, just weeks ago, and his entire family was getting ready to celebrate his sister’s wedding.
