DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Memorial Day weekend is usually a big moneymaker for Door County, but that wasn’t that case this year according to some of the county’s tourism businesses.
“We definitely had less traffic this weekend compared to past Memorial Day weekends,” said Carrie Lautenbach Viste.
Her cherry orchard, market and winery are usually packed through the holiday.
But just because Lautenbach’s Ochard Country Winery and Market is allowed to open, doesn’t mean it will see its usual holiday weekend crowds.
“Everybody’s on both sides of the fence. Some are ready to jump out there and get out of the house. I think some people are still a little hesitant.”
Lautenbach Viste’s tells FOX 11 her employees wore masks, social distancing signs patterned the markets floor, and she’s offering outdoor activities, hoping to attract visitors.
“Definitely lots to do even if you’re not ready to plunge in with all the people.”
Lautenbach Viste wasn’t the only one impacted by the coronavirus pandemic on Memorial Day weekend. One business owner tells me it’s more than fear of spread that’s costing him tourism dollars.
“We’re down about 80 percent from last year,” said David Rack.
Rack runs Cave Point Paddle and Pedal Door County Tours. He tells FOX 11 confusion around safer at home orders are in part to blame for slow sales.
“I think it was a little bit of a surprise like, ‘oh boy, we are open’. I don’t think a lot of people had plans so that probably was a cause for why it was slower too.”
Now both Rack and Lautenbach Viste are hoping sales thru the rest of the summer will make up for what was lost.
