OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A judge denied a request Wednesday to use a jury from outside Winnebago County for the teen accused of attempting to kill a West High School police liaison officer.
Grant Fuhrman, 17, is charged with one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Prosecutors say Fuhrman was shot after stabbing Oshkosh West High School’s police resource officer Mike Wissink on Dec. 3.
Fuhrman’s attorney requested to either move the trial itself to another county, or to bring in a jury from another county for the trial, citing pre-trial publicity of the case.
But at Wednesday’s hearing, Judge Daniel Bissett denied the requests, according to a court official.
No trial date has been set. Fuhrman returns to court July 20 for an arraignment.
The criminal complaint states Fuhrman confronted officer Wissink in his office at Oshkosh West on Dec. 3. Wissink says Fuhrman asked him to look up information on his computer, and Fuhrman stabbed him multiple times with a barbecue fork as he turned away. Court documents also say Wissink couldn’t get to his Taser, so he fired his gun twice. The stabbing and shooting caused Oshkosh West to evacuate, and nearby schools were put on lockdown.
