GREENVILLE, WI (WTAQ) – A new community park complex could be coming soon to the Town of Greenville. But first, they’ll need approval from voters.
“That moniker ‘Field of Dreams’ was assigned to it because it was kind of a dream at that point,” says Town Administrator Joel Gregozeski, “We’re going to move from making it a dream and turn it into reality.”
The site for the Sports and Splash Community Park was originally bought by the town back in 2004. Master planning has been going since 2018, and a $6.5 million referendum will be on the ballot in August.
“The referendum is to give direction whether there is voter approval to finance the construction of a new community park,” Gregozeski tells WTAQ News, “It was identified that some type of aquatic facility would be desired to be included in the overall development…A swimming beach, a splash pad, children’s playground, a couple of full-sized athletic fields that are multi purpose for soccer, rugby, football – two ball diamonds for both baseball and softball – and then a number of recreational trails throughout the site.”
Since 2004, most of the land has been used by a local farmer for agricultural purposes. But Gregozeski says the plan to build the sports complex is just the first phase of development on the 77 acre site.
The announcement of the new complex comes at a bit of an odd time, as most similar facilities are currently closed or have major restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the town is hopeful that the Greenville Sports and Splash Park will open without a hitch once it’s completed.
“Although this is a significant concern for this year, we’ll eventually get back to some normalcy where these types of facilities are going to become a very valued part of infrastructure for the community to help provide that recreational opportunity close to home,” Gregozeski says.
The proposed referendum will be held at the Partisan Primary Election on Tuesday, August 11th. Anyone with questions or concerns about the development should head to the town’s website for more information.
