LITTLE CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Little Chute Fire Department is one step closer to having a new fire station.
Fire fighters and village leaders broke ground at the site of the new fire station on the 1100 block of Depot Street.
The project was announced in December.
The village plans to spend about $6.7 million on the fire station. The funds were allotted in its 2025 budget, with another $2.2 million included in case of overruns. This means unless the project goes far overbudget taxes likely won’t need to be raised to fund its construction.
Little Chute Fire Chief Duane Nechodom says the village needs the new fire station to house more firefighters and improve firefighter safety.
We have 52 fire fighters that we’re cramped for space. But the big one, the biggest reason was the safety of fire fighters. We have no decon (decontamination) room. It’s showers and locker rooms. Now with this new station we come back from a fire, the fire truck pulls in one of the bays, the fire fighters get off go into a decon room, take their turnout gear, throw it in the washer, take a shower and clothes out of a personal locker then go out a different door. They’re the carcinogens home to their families.
The new fire station will measure about 18,000 square feet. Unlike the current station, fire fighters will be able to pull vehicles in and out. Fire fighters must back in fire trucks at its current site, shared with the Fox Valley Metro Police Department.
“It’s overwhelming,” Nechodom said. “It’s great to see dirt being moved and the community, I can’t thank the community enough and the village board supporting us. That’s the big part of it, everybody I talked to through the village supported it.”
The fire station is expected to be completed next spring.
