OCONTO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A rapid drop in water levels is being blamed for a fish die-off in Oconto County.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says its staff members observed low dissolved oxygen levels in the water at North Bay Shore County Park. Hundreds of dead fish, mostly perch and shiners, were piled up on the banks several feet up.
The DNR says water levels likely dropped rapidly in a tributary that flows into the park’s marina. Strong west winds likely pushed water into Green Bay, making the problem worse.
It’s not the first time fish have died in similar conditions at this location. The last time was in 2020.
