GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications for its Homeownership Program.
During the application cycle, the group will choose seven qualified applicants to work with to build and purchase a home.
Qualified applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A need for affordable housing
- The ability to pay an affordable mortgage
- A willingness to partner with Habitat
Those who are selected are expected to contribute 250 to 500 hours of “sweat equity” helping build their own home and others’ homes.
“Habitat for Humanity is often misunderstood as giving homes away,” said Program Success Manager at Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity Valerie Rivas. “In reality, our program is a partnership. With the support of our donors and community, we provide individuals and families the opportunity to purchase a home with a 0% interest mortgage, ensuring payments remain affordable and sustainable long-term.”
According to Habitat for Humanity International’s 2026 State of Homeownership Affordability report, in Wisconsin a household must earn about $114,000 per year to afford a median-priced home. However, the median renter income is $48,500.
Affordable housing in Northeast Wisconsin could become an even greater issue after Newcap shut down Tuesday. As many as 134 households could be homeless again if Newcap grants aren’t transferred to other entities. The Brown County Homeless and Housing Coalition — which the Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity is a member of — is coordinating a response to help people who previously relied on Newcap.
The application cycle ends April 17.
