GREENLEAF, WI (WTAQ) — The Greenleaf Volunteer Fire Department Inc. has announced plans for a complete reconstruction and expansion of their fire station located at 1657 Day Street, in the Village of Greenleaf.
The current station has served the community for more than four decades. Fire officials say the existing facility can no longer adequately support modern fire and rescue operations, training, or current and future equipment and apparatus needs. Additionally, the building does not meet current building codes, standards, or ADA requirements.
The reconstructed station will provide the necessary space and infrastructure to meet growing demands and enhance disaster preparedness. Planned improvements include the appropriate number and size of apparatus bays with sufficient door height and width, expanded floor and storage space, and purpose-built spaces for training, administration, and meetings.
It will also incorporate modern design features to reduce exposure to carcinogens. These features include a complete separation of the clean and contaminated areas, an isolated storage room for personal protective equipment, a decontamination area, dedicated laundry and drying rooms for turnout gear, and showers and changing areas to support the “Shower Within the Hour” initiative so firefighters are not taking contaminates home with them. Also, a diesel exhaust removal system will be installed to immediately capture harmful emissions when vehicles are started and exit the station.
The new facility will include environmental control systems to prevent corrosion and deterioration of apparatus, equipment, and technology infrastructure.
Recognizing the nationwide decline in volunteer staffing levels, fire officials say the facility has been strategically designed to accommodate a potential transformation into a part time or fully staffed station should the need arise.
Bayland Buildings has been selected as the general contractor for this project. Groundwork is scheduled to begin on May 1, with completion anticipated near the end of the year, subject to weather conditions.
