(WTAQ-WLUK) — Amid allegations of misusing taxpayer money, Newcap has decided to close its doors immediately and started informing employees Tuesday morning they no longer have a job.
This comes following a report from two weeks ago stating that operations would cease at the end of June.
It’s unclear how many people Newcap currently employs, but earlier this year former CEO Cheryl Detrick said the organization employed about 100 people between seven office locations in its 10-county service area.
Newcap’s full press release on its closure is as follows:
With deep sadness, Newcap announces that it will be closing its doors after extensive efforts over recent months to remain operational.
The organization faced significant and ongoing financial challenges that increasingly affected its ability to continue providing services. In response, Newcap pursued multiple strategies to stabilize operations, including cost saving measures, staff reductions, and the exploration of alternative funding and partnership options. Despite these efforts, a sustainable path forward could not be identified.
“This is one of the most difficult moments in our organization’s history,” said Deb Barlament, Interim Executive Director. “Our thoughts are with the individuals and families who depend on these services, as well as with the staff who have dedicated themselves to this mission. We pursued every realistic option available to prevent this outcome.”
For many years, Newcap has served as a source of support and stability for individuals and families facing hardship. This closure represents not only the loss of an organization, but a significant loss for the community it has served. The needs that brought people to Newcap remain – and, in many cases, continue to grow.
“We remain deeply grateful for the support of this community,” Deb Barlament added. “It has been our honor to serve, and we hope this moment inspires renewed commitment to those who still need help.”
Community leaders and partner organizations are encouraged to collaborate in addressing the ongoing needs of those affected by this closure.
The Brown County Homeless and Housing Coalition says it’s working on helping those affected by Newcap’s closure.
