DAIRY NEWS – Artificial Intelligence (AI) is providing new opportunities for dairy producers, including the ability to connect data and information from multiple systems on their farms to make better decisions and enhance herd management. The Smart Dairy Workshop presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDP) brings dairy owners and upper-management teams together for an interactive session led by two industry experts. The duo will use a combination of research findings and real-world expertise to help producers understand how AI can be used in their operations and where it brings the most value.
“I’m looking forward to attending the Smart Dairy Workshop to learn from the presenters and other dairy producer teams on how to use new tools and develop an action plan we can implement right away,” said David Trimner, dairy producer from Athens, Wis., and PDP board member. “We’re looking to glean unique ways to use artificial intelligence tools on the farm and hear what other producers are doing what we haven’t thought of or aren’t aware of yet.”
Two repeating sessions of the one-day workshop will be held on Wed., April 15, at Chippewa Valley Technical Center in Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Thurs., April 16, at Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center in Manitowoc, Wis. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program will conclude at 3:45 p.m. each day.
Workshop presenters include:
- Dr. Jeffrey Bewley, PhD, Holstein Association USA Executive Director of Genetics and Innovation, is a native of Kentucky who grew up working on his grandfather’s dairy farm. After earning a B.S. in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky and an M.S. in Dairy Science from UW-Madison, Dr. Bewley focused his PhD work at Purdue University on the application and economics of Precision Dairy Farming technologies. He has spent much of his career focused on dairy data and technologies in various industry roles, securing more than $8 million in funding during his research career, publishing more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and giving more than 100 invited presentations around the world.
- Dr. Miel Hostens, PhD, is the Robert and Anne Everett Associate Professor of Digital Dairy Management and Data Analytics in the Department of Animal Science and a visiting professor at Belgium’s Ghent University Lab for Animal Nutrition and Animal Product Quality. With a strong belief in the need for more data-driven dairy science through research and industry collaborations, Hostens has been involved in multiple projects around the world. In 2013, a prototype of an analytical data pipeline and data warehouse architecture he developed during his PhD was acquired by Delaval, which was subsequently merged into Dairy Data Warehouse.
