(ST. NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) LISLE, Ill. – St. Norbert College opened the Northern Athletics College Conference slate with a split at Benedictine University, falling 4-1 in the opening game before storming back with a 10-4 victory in two conference games at Benedictine Baseball Field.
The Green Knights (11-5) earned their first conference win scoring 10-straight runs after trailing by three runs in the second inning.
In the opening game, Benedictine broke a scoreless tie in the third inning on a walk with the bases loaded, before adding two more runs in the sixth and one run in the eighth. St. Norbert recorded its lone run of the outing on a Zach Bostrand single that scored Will DeBruin in the ninth.
DeBruin and Bostrand each had two hits in the loss. Jace Midbon took the loss, pitching six innings with three strikeouts and three walks while allowing three runs on eight hits.
After trailing by three runs in the second game, Ethan Volz (pictured) and Matt Schuch scored two runs on an error by the Eagles with the bases loaded in the third inning to make it 3-2. Joey Marella tied the game in fourth on a fielder’s choice from Schuch. The two joined in tandem again in the sixth, when a single from Schuch scored Marella for the seconds time. Two ground-outs made it 6-3 while a single from Volz scored Carson Krumrei.
Tyler Dean homered in the eighth while a double from DeBruin made it 9-3 in the eighth. DeBruin scored St. Norbert’s 10th run of the game in the ninth off a Benedictine error.
Volz led with three hits, while Dean, DeBruin and Schuch all had two in the win.
Charlie Gretz earned his second win of the year, pitching six innings with one strikeout and three walks while allowing three runs on seven hits.
