(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team (5-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell to No. 23 Georgetown (6-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) 11-10 on Saturday morning at Valley Fields Dome in its BIG EAST opener.
“We fought incredibly hard for the full 60 minutes today. Our defense was outstanding at generating extra possessions, and as a team, we played really well across the board. While a one-goal loss is frustrating, I am incredibly proud of this group and the resilience they showed from the first draw to the final whistle” head coach Meredith Black said of the game.
The Golden Eagles led 9-7 late in the third quarter before the Hoyas scored four straight to take the lead for good. The Hoyas held a 14-12 turnover advantage, while Marquette finished with a 13-10 edge on draw controls. Each team attempted 26 shots.
Marquette was led by Isabelle Casucci’s three goals, while Tess Osburn, Ella Mautz and Riley Jenkins each scored twice. Dani Serrano recorded one goal and three assists, and goalkeeper Jillian Howell made nine saves in 60 minutes.
Georgetown opened the scoring with a free‑position goal at 14:25 of the first quarter, and Marquette answered with a woman‑up goal from Jenkins less than two minutes later. The teams traded goals throughout the opening period, ending tied 4-4 after goals from Jenkins, Casucci and Mautz.
Georgetown moved back ahead 5-4 early in the second before Marquette scored three straight. Osburn tied the game at five at 5:21, Mautz converted a free‑position shot at 3:43 and Osburn added another at 2:58 to give MU a 7-5 halftime lead.
Casucci scored twice in the third quarter, including a woman‑up goal at 1:28, to help push Marquette ahead 9-7. Georgetown responded with two goals in the final minute of the period, cutting the MU lead to 9-8 entering the fourth.
A free‑position goal at 12:34 tied the game before the Hoyas took a 10-9 lead on a goal at 11:39 and extended it to 11-9 on Molly Davies’ finish with 7:37 remaining. Serrano scored with 5:54 left, but Marquette could not pull even in the closing minutes as a last-second shot missed the net.
