KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A candidate for Kaukauna mayor announced he has decided to drop out of the race, just three weeks before the election.
In a post on his campaign Facebook page, Daniel Schafer wrote, in part, “Over the course of this campaign, there has been a significant amount of hate and anger directed toward me. There have also been individuals who have not respected personal boundaries and have expected me to agree with their demands.”
He went on to say, “Unfortunately, this situation has taken a toll on both me and my family. After many conversations with my family and close friends, I have made the difficult decision to step down.”
Politics has changed over the years. Campaigns and those running for office have been treated very differently as time has gone on. There was once a time when politics included dignity, integrity and respect. Unfortunately, much of that seems to be missing today.
Schafer said anyone who donated to his campaign will receive a refund.
The Kaukauna mayoral election is April 7. Schafer was running against current Mayor Tony Penterman, who is seeking his fifth consecutive two-year term in office. Although he discontinued his campaign, officials say Schafer’s name will still appear on the ballots because they have already been printed.
