KESHENA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Bureau of Indian Affairs has released a draft environmental impact statement for a proposed casino in Kenosha, according to the Menominee Indian Tribe.
The tribe wants to build a Hard Rock casino in the southeastern corner of the state, but needs multiple federal state and approvals to do so, including an environmental assessment.
“Both the City of Kenosha and Kenosha County have approved agreements supporting the project, and the EA release marks an important new step in the federal review process,” the tribe said a statement Friday.
Menominee Tribal Chairman Joey Awonohopay said:
This is a long-awaited opportunity, and we are excited to have arrived at the next phase in this process. The EA release marks an important step forward for our tribal members, the people of Kenosha County, and all of Wisconsin. This project will deliver significant, local economic impact, create more than 1,000 permanent jobs in the final phase of the project, and support families and businesses across the region. The project’s benefits will directly benefit the members of our Tribe, as we address urgent needs in health care, infrastructure, and education. This brings us all one step closer to a stronger future, and we are grateful for such strong local support for this transformative project.
The tribe’s statement does not say how long the public comment period of the draft version of the statement will take, or when it could be finalized.
The proposal calls for a Hard Rock Cafe, six new restaurants, a Hard Rock Live entertainment venue and 150-room hotel 60 acres west of I-94 at 122nd Ave and 60th St. The casino would include 1,500 slot machines, more than 50 table games and a sportsbook. The tribe projects the $360 million project would draw 2.4 million people per year.
