SILVER CLIFF, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — All town facilities in Silver Cliff are closed as of Tuesday morning because the municipality doesn’t have any insurance coverage, but the town chair hopes the situation is resolved yet today.
The town’s website has a notice stating, “Effective March 9th at midnight all town of Silver Cliff facilities will be temporarily closed pending the procurement of insurance.”
According to Town Chair Dee Farley, the previous insurance carrier provided a non-renewal of coverage notice. Efforts to obtain replacement coverage have been unsuccessful to this point.
The closure includes fire and ambulance services, so the town is working with nearby Athelstane to provide mutual aid, Farley said.
The issue has been discussed for several months. According to the minutes of a Dec. 9 meeting, “We are good with insurance until March 2026 when our next premium is due.”
The minutes for the Jan. 13 board meeting reference “our claims that Rural Mutual Insurance cited for dropping us over an eight year period which did not include the claim from the tornado.”
Minutes for meetings since then are not posted on the town’s website, but the issue was listed on several agendas. A special meeting to discuss it was held Monday.
Silver Cliff is about 20 miles northwest of Marinette.
