SHAWANO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A sheriff’s deputy shot and killed an armed person overnight in Shawano County.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice says deputies were called to a home in the 2300 block of Highway 22 in the town of Green Valley just before 1:45 a.m.
When deputies arrived, they found a male locked inside a bathroom. The male refused to get out and announced he had a gun. Deputies tried less lethal force, investigators said, but that was ineffective.
The male then moved toward officers, holding what the officers believed to be a gun. One deputy fired, hitting the male.
Emergency medical services crews were called and life-saving measures were attempted at the scene. The male was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No one else was injured during the incident.
State officials say the incident was captured on body cameras.
The deputy will be placed on administrative leave, per department policy. The deputy’s name was not released.
The state Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting. State law requires that an outside agency investigate whenever a law enforcement officer uses deadly force.
