MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Somewhat intertwined plans for the future of two facilities – the Stephenson Public Library and the former UW-Green Bay campus – were moved forward by a county board committee Wednesday.
With the closure of the UWGB-Marinette campus, the county has been examining options for the facilities.
On Wednesday, the Infrastructure Committee unanimously endorsed plans for creation of the “Special Committee on UW–Campus Redevelopment Options.”
“The Committee’s purpose is to identify and present financially sustainable options for the redevelopment of the UW–Campus properties, each accompanied by feasibility considerations, estimated capital and operating costs, potential funding sources, governance structures, timelines, risk assessments, and anticipated community impacts,” the resolution states.
Once created, the 11-member panel would have six months to report back to the County Board. In that time, at least one public listening session is required.
Last month, the County Board voted to postpone transferring the campus, fieldhouse and Runnoe Park to the city of Marinette to this committee to review options for the site.
As part of the discussions on the future of the campus, it was suggested that Marinette County – which operates the library in a building owed by the city – could move the library to the former campus.
However, the Infrastructure Committee also endorsed a revised 25-year lease to keep operations at the current site, 1700 Hall Ave. The new lease would be for June 1, 2026, to May 31, 2051, with a renewal option.
The full County Board will review both items March 31.
