FOX CROSSING, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A dog was shot by a police officer as it attacked another dog at a park.
The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Fritsch Park.
According to a news release Monday from the Fox Crossing Police Department, officers were called to the park after receiving reports of a dog at large. Authorities said this dog “had a prior history of aggressive behavior” that included a documented incident in 2025, in which the dog got loose and attacked another dog and its owner. The attacking dog’s owner was cited for having a vicious animal, FCPD said.
Once they arrived at Fritsch Park, police officers attempted to apprehend the dog using a catch pole and leash, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Then, the dog was observed by an officer “actively attacking another dog.” The owner of the victimized dog was trying to separate the two animals.
“In an effort to immediately stop the attack and protect the safety of those involved, the officer discharged their service firearm, striking the dog,” the release states.
The attacking dog’s owners arrived a few minutes later and took their dog to a veterinary facility for treatment, police said. Details about the dog’s condition or whether it survived were not provided.
“The officer’s actions were taken to prevent serious injury to the person and continued attacks to the other dog involved,” authorities said.
Situations involving animals are always difficult, and the Fox Crossing Police Department recognizes that incidents resulting in harm to an animal can be upsetting to members of the community. The Fox Crossing Police Department is still conducting its review of the incident.
FCPD said this is a reminder of the importance of properly securing your pets and ensuring they are under control at all times — particularly in public spaces. Doing so will “help prevent unfortunate situations like this from occurring.”
