(ST NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) MAUSTON – St. Norbert College senior Jace Midbon became the first Green Knight pitcher in nearly two decades to a no-hitter in a 17-0 route of Maranatha Baptist University in a non-conference game at Woodside Sports Complex.
Midbon earned his first win of the season with seven scoreless innings, striking out a career-high 15 batters in a dominant performance, which is also the third most in program history for a single game. In his final three innings of work, Midbon struck out seven batters.
The Green Knights (2-2) took a 1-0 lead off a Matt Schuch sacrifice bunt in the third inning. A two-run single from Declan Kane in the fourth made it 3-0 before Kane scored a fourth in the same inning on a passed ball. A triple from Connor LaBar scored Tyler Dean in the fifth for a 6-0 St. Norbert lead.
Extra base hits from Will DeBruin and Dean extended the lead to 12-0 in the fifth, while the Green Knights added five more in the sixth. LaBar stole home, while a triple from Schuch made it 15-0, and two runs from Schuch and DeBruin off wild pitches gave St. Norbert a 17-0 lead without a Sabercats response.
LaBar led the Green Knights with three hits and three runs with an RBI, while DeBruin had two hits and two RBIs. Carson Krumrei had two hits and an RBI.
The Sabercats only managed to get three runners on base via two walks and one St. Norbert error. Jonathan Jeske took the loss, pitching four innings with five strikeouts, two walks and three earned runs.
The Green Knights will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Mel Nicks Sports Complex beginning at 11:30 a.m.
