(WTAQ-WLUK) — A Wisconsin man was fatally shot by law enforcement officers in Texas after allegedly fleeing through a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in a stolen vehicle and firing at authorities during a high-speed chase.
He was identified as James McMillan, 33, of Greenfield.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sierra Blanca checkpoint in the remote Big Bend Sector between El Paso and Van Horn. Authorities say a Border Patrol drug K9 alerted to McMillan’s vehicle and agents directed him to pull over for a secondary search. Instead, McMillian reportedly sped off from the checkpoint and a pursuit ensued.
Officials said during the chase, McMillan opened fire out of the window of his vehicle. Law enforcement returned gunshots.
Using a PIT maneuver, troopers successfully stopped McMillan’s vehicle. He barricaded himself inside the car and, according to authorities, pointed his weapon toward officers, who then opened fire. McMillan was shot and killed.
No law enforcement officers or civilians were hurt in the incident.
Investigators said the vehicle McMillan was driving had been reported stolen in Arizona.
