GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Emplify Health by Bellin in Green Bay was host to a mass casualty training drill Wednesday morning.
The drill consisted of 40 medical, police, and fire personnel who responded to a simulated mass shooting event. Bellin college students portrayed injured patients coming in through personal vehicles and EMS. Full moulage, which is a mock injury applied to an actor for training purposes, was applied for all students.
Green Bay Police Officer Jon Nejedlo said one of the main takeaways from the drill was how many moving parts there are in responding to this type of incident., and…
“How many decisions have to be made in a very small, compressed amount of time based on limited information, with limited options and resources,” he said. “This training highlighted the need to understand those decisions, and give yourself permission to make those decisions.”
Following the drill, officials from all agencies discussed communication between agencies during the drill, how environmental issues (like weather) could affect response, evidence collection, reunification, etc.
While Wednesday’s scenario was framed as a mass shooting, the skill and expertise in dealing with this kind of situation can help in other areas, too.
“Although a mass casualty such as an active shooter may not happen, we could have a structure collapse, or we could have a natural weather event where a large amount of people are injured,” said Officer Nejedlo. “Injury is injury, so we would still respond in the same way.”
Agencies that participated in the drill include Emplify Health by Bellin emergency room staff, security and athletic trainers, Bellin college students, Green Bay Metro Fire Department, Green Bay Police Department, and Brown County Dispatch.
Emplify Health by Bellin officials said they hope to conduct training of this scale at least once a year.
