(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) TEMPE, AZ – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team (3-2) fell to Arizona State (2-2) in a high-scoring affair, 19-16, Tuesday afternoon at Sun Devil Lacrosse Stadium.
Freshman Dani Serrano led the way for the Golden Eagles with six points (five goals, one assist), notching a hat trick in the first half, while the quadrant of Hanna Bodner, Sarah Beth Burns, Isabelle Casucci, and Ella Mautz each tallied two for MU. Freshman Jillian Howell made her second-straight start in goal, recording a career-high 11 saves in the defeat.
The Sun Devils controlled the game early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter before MU’s defense settled in. Serrano got the Golden Eagles on the board off a feed from Burns, moving the score to 4-1 through one period.
ASU added another goal to start the second, but two-straight goals from Serrano and Mautz cut the deficit to two, 5-3, with 11 to go until halftime. The Sun Devils would score four unanswered before Serrano notched her third goal of the game, moving the score to 9-4 for the home team.
The Golden Eagles offense soared in the next four minutes, scoring three of the next four goals to cut the deficit to three. ASU added another score just before the half, with the home squad leading 11-7 at the break.
Each team traded scores to start the second half, before two-straight goals from Bodner and Riley Jenkins brought MU within three again, 13-10. Arizona State would stretch the lead back to five with a pair of goals, but the Golden Eagles would take advantage of an ASU yellow card with a three-goal burst in the power play, moving the score to 15-13. The Sun Devils would add another score to make it 16-13 heading into the final period of the game.
ASU would start the fourth with a pair of goals, but the Marquette offense would respond with tallies from Bodner and Tess Osburn to again pull within three. However, missed shot opportunities in the waning minutes of the contest sealed the 19-16 loss for MU on the road.
