Green Bay Public Market won’t open until 2027 at the earliest

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — On Broadway held its annual State of the Broadway District Tuesday.

The event provided updates on upcoming events and current projects.

President & CEO of On Broadway, Inc., Brian Johnson, highlighted the organization’s achievements over the past year, including bringing a Milwaukee Brewers mural to the district, expanding the Christkindlmarket and improvements at Leicht Park.

“A lot of people visit the Broadway district every single year,” said Johnson.

In 2025, Johnson said, the Broadway District saw more than 730,000 individuals make a total of 2.6 million visits. He added, “It takes years to build up that momentum and that’s what we’ve done and now you’re starting to see sort of all pistons firing and we’re really excited not only about some of the stuff we got to talk about today but some of the stuff that we know is on the horizon.”

Johnson looked to the future of the district by mentioning the second phase of the Shipyard District project coming this year, a new streetscape grant program for Broadway businesses to improve their outdoor space and adding more opportunities for the Farmers Market Mini Boss Program.

Millions of dollars of investments are going into several large projects too.

Phase 2 of the Shipyard development will get underway this year. The Great Lawn, dog park, beach volleyball courts along with other attractions are being added.

To the north, in Leicht Park, the pavilion will be built following last year’s groundbreaking.

Johnson also talked about the shortcomings on the Green Bay Public Market project. Originally announced in 2022, the project to turn Old Fort Square building into a public market has already been extended three times. Construction for the project is now required to be completed by the end of 2027.

He said, “Fundraising is a piece that we obviously have to fill, but we have so many contingency plans that re-engineer the project that might phase in things and defer certain pieces or components.”

But even without a firm date for the Public Market project to be completed, Broadway District business owners are excited with what’s happened and what’s to come.

“The On Broadway District is growing every year. You know, it’s bringing more people into the area and it’s creating familiarity with these businesses. So it’s great,” added Eric Wagner, owner of Sanctuary Tattoo Studio.
