(WTAQ-WLUK) — Sunday, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports that 36 sturgeon were harvested on the 9th day of the season, hitting the cap for adult female lake sturgeon.
The 36 harvested on Sunday brings the total number of sturgeon speared on the Winnebago System this year to 202 juvenile females, 662 adult females, and 660 males.
“With the 19 adult females harvested today, we have reached the 90-99% Winnebago System-wide harvest cap for adult females. Spearers with an unfilled Lake Winnebago tag have until 1 p.m. tomorrow (Monday, Feb. 23) to harvest a sturgeon. At that time, the 2026 sturgeon spearing season will CLOSE,” the DNR says.
The DNR says colder temperatures helped firm up the ice on the lakes, allowing more spearers to seek their harvest. The east side of the lake saw the highest number of registered sturgeon with 21 between Pipe, Quinney and Stockbridge stations.
