MANITOWOC COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The DNR has ruled out a manure ‘discharge event’ as the reason for a fish die off in Silver Lake, but the investigation continues.
After anglers noticed minnows they were using for ice fishing were dying in the water, as well as dead bluegills and other fish at the 73-acre lake, the DNR sent crews to investigate on Jan. 26. Low oxygen levels were detected but a cause was not immediately determined.
DNR fisheries biologist Jason Breeggemann provided an update on Tuesday.
“The water quality program received results from E coli testing which were within normal ranges and do not indicate a discharge event. We are still awaiting additional water quality analyses which could take up to a month to get the results,” he said.
The lake had a similar event in 2014-2015, when it was determined it was caused by a breakdown of plants and other organic material.
