GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Bicycle shops in Northeast Wisconsin, across the country and internationally are organizing rides to honor Alex Pretti.
A ride will be held in Green Bay, where he grew up, as well as in Minnesota, where he spent the last 20 years of his life.
Federal agents sent to Minneapolis to enforce President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration shot and killed Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, at a protest after he approached federal officers. He was carrying a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and two magazines.
Since putting a poster online for its unity bike ride this Saturday to commemorate Pretti, Pete’s Garage has seen a lot of interest from Green Bay-area cyclists.
“I checked my phone again last night. We’ve got quite a few shares, so I hope it’s a big turnout,” said Nick Rozek, the manager of Pete’s Garage.
Pretti, a 2006 Preble High School graduate, was a cycling and outdoors enthusiast.
“We were really inspired by Angry Catfish, and given that Alex Pretti was a local guy, I think it means even more,” said Rozek.
Angry Catfish is a Minneapolis bike shop where Pretti was a customer. He participated in organized group rides around the Twin Cities.
“Alex is a cyclist, and if you’re a cyclist, you’re part of this community,” said Jerrod Alder of Catfish Bike Shop.
Angry Catfish’s idea to honor Pretti with a bike ride has spread to more than 50 locations across the United States. Bike shops in Canada and Finland are participating, too.
“I think someone that is that cheerful and loving and has touched so many people needs to be honored,” said Alder.
People wanting to ride in Green Bay should show up to Pete’s Garage at about 1 o’clock. At 1:30 p.m., they’ll be heading to the Fox River Trail, riding south and coming back on Broadway to close out the approximately 12-mile ride.
“Really easy pace, really easy route. All bike types are going to be able to go through there,” said Rozek.
Recyclist Bicycle Co. in Kaukauna will also be holding a ride for Pretti. To participate, meet at the bike shop at noon Saturday.
