GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — As Green Bay continues to see more residential and commercial development in its downtown area, some residents and visitors are questioning the availability of parking spots.
But city officials say that while downtown may seem congested right now due to construction projects, there are still plenty of places to park.
Business is good in downtown Green Bay, and development is booming. Construction on a new eight-story luxury apartment building is moving along. Its expected opening later this year is just one of the many projects bringing excitement to downtown in 2026.
“We’ve had cranes in the air for the past few months. Behind me is the NOVA Green Bay development. 269 units under construction, opening this year, which is nice. A few blocks away from there, the U.S. Bank building is also under construction, with 66 residential apartment units with great views and activity,” said Downtown Green Bay, Inc. Executive Director Jeff Mirkes.
It’s no secret that adding residents to a city’s downtown is a catalyst for other retail development, bringing more visitors, too. And along with those extra visitors comes the need for parking — something downtown Green Bay has plenty of, according to officials.
“There’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,500 parking spaces in the core of the downtown, and another 1,000 parking spaces on street or [in] parking lots,” Mirkes said. “So, to meet the needs of what is here and what is immediately planned, there is ample parking spaces in downtown.”
Hagemeister Park General Manger Corey Vann took it upon himself to educate people who say there’s not enough parking in downtown Green Bay.
“A lot of people pull up on Washington Street, they see the street full of the street parking, but there is a ramp connected to us called the River Ramp, and there is plenty of meter spots available,” said Vann.
He created a video of himself navigating parking in downtown, driving right into the River Ramp on Pine Street. The nearby Cherry Street ramp has even more parking spaces.
Standing in front of Hagemeister Park, Vann added, “I can see three, four ramps just from right here, and it’s just, do other people see them? Do they know they exist? It’s just education to the the public and the people downtown.”
The majority of Green Bay’s street parking, along with its ramps, are metered, so you have to pay about $1 an hour. But after 6 p.m. during the week, and all weekend long, those spots are free.
