GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A veterans housing project on Green Bay’s east side is receiving an additional $204,000 in funding.
The Green Bay Redevelopment Authority approved the money for Veterans 1st of Northeast Wisconsin at their Tuesday meeting.
The nonprofit is building a village of 21 tiny houses, as well as a community center, for homeless veterans on the site of the former Brown County Mental Health Center on St. Anthony Drive.
Officials say the funds from the RDA will help pay for utility work and excavation of the site.
“We’re really excited to see something like this take shape. It is also meeting a current unmet need in our community, providing support and wrap-around services to our unhoused veterans,” said Will Peters, Green Bay Neighborhood Development specialist.
Veterans 1st broke ground on the project this summer. It expects work to be complete in two years.
Eligible veterans would be screened to live in the 400 or 600-square-foot homes. Rent will be $900 with the chance to qualify for assistance. Services would be offered with the goal of getting veterans into an independent living situation within five years.
