GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay residents will see voucher levy information on their 2025 property tax statements.
The school district says residents will see the new information under the “Note” section. It will also explain how much of the Green Bay Area Public School District’s levy is for the purpose of private school vouchers.
On April 15, 2025, the Green Bay city council approved a request from the Green Bay Area Public School District Board of Education for voucher transparency by providing information on the property tax bills. Under the “Note” section this year, residents will find a line that reads: “Of the amount levied by GBAPS, $9,972,474.70 is for the purpose of private school vouchers.”
“Since the voucher program was first implemented, the cost of the program has grown at a significant rate, resulting in an increased tax burden for property owners,” stated Board President James Lyerly. “The amount that will be levied by the District for the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program and Special Needs Scholarship Program for all municipalities will be $14,097,036. For this school year, the levy increased by over $1 million for the voucher programs alone, yet only 54 new students were enrolled. At a time when our school district is continuing to make budget cuts and consolidating schools, it is important that taxpayers understand that there is a significant amount of taxes that are levied that do not pay for one pencil, one staff member, or in any way support students in the Green Bay Area Public School District. The additional line added to the property tax bills provides the transparency our community demands.”
