GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Tuesday marked the annual battle of the bells between the Green Bay police and fire departments.
The Green Bay Police Department and Green Bay Metro Fire Department once again partnered with the Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay this holiday season to see who could bring in the most donations to the red kettles.
For one hour, Police Chief Chris Davis and Fire Chief Matthew Knott rang bells at the entrance and exit of Festival Foods on West Mason Street. In total, nearly $260 was raised from almost 40 donors.
In the end, GBPD was declared the victor and walked away with this year’s bragging rights.
Davis said the police department also won in last year’s competition, but that’s not why officers participate.
“It’s something that as police officers and first responders, that we see make a huge difference in the lives of people, often at the worst time of their lives. [The Salvation Army is] a great partner in disaster response or emergency response to help people recover when the bad thing happens, whatever that is. So it’s a great opportunity for us to give back to an organization that we work with to help people out,” Davis says.
Knott added this is a great opportunity for firefighters to give back.
“The true winner is Salvation Army in this, but really, we like to have these friendly competitions with the police, with our law enforcement partners. It’s just a great way to raise awareness for a great cause,” Knott said.
