(WTAQ-WLUK) — Holiday season bell-ringing begins Wednesday in Green Bay and the Fox Valley, as Salvation Army corps in both areas kick off their Christmas campaigns.
The Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay announced its goal is to collect $1.33 million this holiday season. A giant coin was ceremoniously dropped into an oversized red kettle Wednesday outside Bass Pro Shop in Ashwaubenon to mark the official start of the campaign.
“Your support, our community, will not only brighten the holidays for us all, but will help families move on from hardship this year,” Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay Advisory Board Chair Missy Steffek said.
This marks the 134th year of the Salvation Army’s annual red kettle campaign. While its mission remains the same, the need for help is increasing — especially as economic uncertainty persists.
“The challenges of the current economy continue to impact us all in our community. Families living in poverty are facing fears to make ends meet,” Steffek said.
Funds collected in red kettles go toward the Salvation Army’s Christmas distribution, food pantry, case work and their lunch program, which will help serve 37,000 hot meals in the year ahead.
“I think through the years, maybe the needs have changed, but it just does seem important that we’re able to be here and continue the work that we do, and provide the services that we do for people that are in need,” Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay Marketing Specialist Nicole Hanley said.
Meanwhile, in the Fox Valley, Gustman Subaru offered Wednesday to match up to $1,700 in donations. People are also invited to come to the dealership at 310 S. Lynndale Drive in Appleton to donate nonperishable food items and toys.
“Whether it relates to actions and changes that the federal government has undertaken, or simply just the increase in cost of living that people are experiencing, regardless of the source, the need is present in our community,” Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford said.
The red kettle Christmas campaign is the largest fundraiser of the year for local Salvation Army corps. The money raised is used to fund its services year-round.
No matter which campaign you give to this season, both Salvation Army corps say any donation will go a long way.
“It’s hard work, but it’s so rewarding,” Hanley said.
