NIAGARA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An officer-involved death in Marinette County is under investigation.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the incident occurred in the city of Niagara shortly before 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, when an officer with the Niagara Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
“The subject fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed and swerved into oncoming traffic in the 1000 block of Main Street, hitting a commercial vehicle,” a news release states.
Lifesaving measures were rendered, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.
Per agency policy, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave. The DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation will review the evidence and determine the facts of the incident, then turn over their reports to the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office.
The Wisconsin State Patrol, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Rescue, Niagara Fire Department are assisting in the investigation.
