GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — One in four people in Brown County face food insecurity.
That’s before FoodShare benefits were paused due to the ongoing government shutdown.
“Hunger and food insecurity is not a new problem. Unfortunately, it’s something that’s been with us for some time. I think becoming more severe with the increase in grocery prices,” said Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich.
The city says many of its pantries have seen demand surge by as much as 40% in recent months.
“Right now, we’re averaging 250 to 260 families per day, five days a week, coming in to shop for their weekly groceries. That’s about 1,300 families per week in need in this Brown County area,” said Bob Hornacek, assistant executive director of Paul’s Pantry Inc.
Paul’s Pantry is funded entirely by donations.
“We need food, we need funds and we need volunteers,” said Hornacek.
According to the city, some pantries have served triple the number of families compared to previous years.
Brown County United Way President and CEO Robyn Davis shared insight for those who may not have access to a food pantry or are unsure of where to start.
“Families that may be experiencing food insecurity for the first time or maybe not the first time, 2-1-1 is an immediate resource that folks can access. And it’s that simple. 2-1-1, dialing on the phone, 24/7,” said Davis.
She added, “In some areas that would be considered rural, there may not be a food pantry. And so, we are really looking at how we can get resources from greater Green Bay local pantries and get them out into the community.”
Those who spoke at Wednesday’s press conference offered the reminder that food insecurity can impact anyone.
“The people we see look just like you and me. There’s a lot of people who have a really difficult life, usually through no fault of their own,” said Hornacek.
The call wasn’t just for the donation of your time or money, but for empathy toward others. Everyone who spoke emphasized that the Green Bay community is very philanthropic and only encourages donations from those who are able.
