GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — It was no tricks and all treats Friday for children served by the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay, as they received a big Halloween surprise.
AT&T and Human-I-T donated 150 refurbished laptops to club students who have little-to-no access to the internet or devices to complete their homework. The kids also received backpacks filled with school supplies.
The goal of this annual program is to help close what’s referred to as the “digital divide.” According to U.S. Census Bureau data, millions of people nationwide — including in Wisconsin — still don’t have access to the internet or connected devices needed to fully participate in the online world.
Officials say in this digital age, access to technology isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity.
“Giving kids Chromebooks for personal use at home means that these kids are going to have the tools they need to be successful learners. They’ll be able to gain important technology and 21st century skills that are just essential for life and learning and success,” said Johanna Wicklund, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Bay & Lakes Region.
Additionally, AT&T provided a $25,000 contribution to support the club’s technology needs and digital literacy classes. The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay plans to use the money to purchase additional computers for use at club locations.
