GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Green Bay East High School football coach put on paid administrative leave two weeks ago has been told district administrators are recommending the school board fire him.
Niko Sila met with administrators Thursday.
The school district provided a statement about the meeting Thursday afternoon:
In response to a request for confirmation from the media, the District can confirm that at today’s meeting with District administration, GBAPS employee Niko Sila was presented an option to resign (which he has been given seven calendar days to make a decision), or if he chooses not to, District administration will recommend to the Board of Education termination of his contract.
As the media has reported, the District is not legally permitted to share the specific allegations against Mr. Sila. The District can confirm that Mr. Sila and his representatives have shared with the media an incomplete accounting of the allegations.
At the time the District is able to release information regarding the allegations, a full and complete list of Board of Education Policy and state law violations will be provided.
Sila was put on leave on Oct. 16, the day before his team played its final game of the season against Green Bay West.
“I just want to say I appreciate every single one of you all,” said Sila to the media after the meeting. “I couldn’t defend myself, so the community spoke for me. The students spoke for me. At the end of the day we put our youth first and I’m praying and hoping our district listens.”
This was Sila’s third meeting with school district officials since he was told he was being put on leave.
“My heart is broken because of the youth,” said Sila. “Because of the kids I give my all to. The kids I took home because of safety reasons. The kids I helped feed. The family members we create such a strong bond and trust together. It seems like their voice was all for nothing and I don’t want them to feel like that.”
Sila and his supporters have said allegations against Sila include undermining administrators, being critical of school administrators, and providing students rides home.
Malik Lynch, a representative for Sila who was in the meeting when Sila was put on leave, has said the district received a list of about 20 allegations against the coach.
Chelci Sila has said her husband denies some of the allegations and says the rest are being taken out of context.
An online petition to reinstate Sila has gathered more than 2,100 signatures as of Thursday afternoon.
Sila has been head coach of East’s football team for three seasons and has been employed by the district since 2018. He is also East’s manager of engagement, attendance and advocacy.
