(WTAQ-WLUK) — The Brown County board of supervisors unanimously approved next year’s budget.
The board of supervisors entered a 23-0 vote on Wednesday, approving county executive Troy Streckenbach’s 2026 budget plan.
“Brown County remains focused on providing valuable services, investing wisely in our infrastructure, and maintaining a strong fiscal house,” says Streckenbach. “Our budget represents Brown County’s vision and how we can best make it a reality while doing it in the best interest of our taxpayers. Thank you to the County Board of Supervisors for unanimously supporting it.”
The 2026 mill rate will decrease by 14 cents, from $2.80 to $2.66, which is the lowest mill rate on record. This is due to the Brown County Board of Supervisors adopting the Debt Reduction, Infrastructure, and Property Tax Relief Plan that was first adopted back in 2017.
Brown County’s budget levy for 2026 is $96.25 million, which accounts for about $1.5 million in net new construction and the closure of some Tax Increment Districts (TID). The county’s outstanding debt will decrease again in 2026 by $7.76 million, bringing the total to $29.08 million, the lowest level in over 35 years.
Since taking office, Brown County has paid off nearly $128 million in debt burden, thus saving property taxpayers millions of dollars in interest payments alone, securing financial well-being for future generations.
Several major infrastructure projects will take place in 2026, including continued work on the South Bridge Connector project. A new I-41 interchange in De Pere and town of Lawrence is due to be completed, along with work expected to be completed on County Highway EB from County Highway F to Mid Valley Drive.
Brown County will invest $29.46 million on 17 different road, bridge, and infrastructure projects in 2026 as well. This means 31.92 lane miles of road improvements to the county’s highway system.
