(WTAQ-WLUK) — Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney is running for Wisconsin attorney general.
Toney, a Republican, announced his candidacy Tuesday. The election will be in November 2026.
“Two years ago, at 39, I underwent open-heart surgery because of a defective heart valve. By the grace of God — and years of running — my heart held on,” Toney said in a statement. “That clarity led me here: if I could still make a difference for Wisconsin, I would. After seven years of broken promises and political spin in the Attorney General’s office, it’s time for change.”
Toney says his priorities as attorney general would be to improve the state’s crime labs, aggressively prosecute drug crimes, target violent crime in Milwaukee and “put public safety over politics.”
The race is shaping up to be a rematch of the 2022 election, with Democratic incumbent Josh Kaul announcing earlier this month he would seek re-election. Kaul narrowly defeated Toney three years ago.
