GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Phase one of the Children’s Museum of Green Bay’s long-awaited expansion project is officially underway.
It marks a major milestone in the museum’s Reaching New Heights capital campaign.
On Monday, demolition began on the pole building next door to the museum. The process is expected to take about two days. This will make room for construction of the museum’s new addition, which more than doubles the size of their current facility.
“We moved to the Bay Beach area in 2019 with a building that’s roughly 10,000 square feet. We were aware that this building would not be the size we needed,” said Toni Burnett, executive director of the Children’s Museum of Green Bay. “[We’re] expanding the museum over 16,000 square feet, so we will be 26,000 square feet in the end.”
To date, the museum has raised over $4.2 million, but is still shy of its $6.2 million goal. Officials are asking for help in generating the last $2 million needed to finish phase one and kickstart full construction on the addition.
“We are hoping we can complete that by the end of this year, but we still have $2 million to raise. So we are looking at businesses and the community to support this project,” said Burnett.
New spaces that will be featured in the expansion include a STEAMworks lab, trades industry training exhibit and traveling gallery that will host rotating exhibits to keep the museum fresh and engaging for families year-round.
Each year, the Children’s Museum of Green Bay welcomes more than 70,000 visitors. Burnett said with the expansion, the museum hopes to bring in over 150,000 people.
“It’s pretty packed all day long, so we really do need to expand. The museum is literally bursting at the seams,” Burnett said.
