DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) — Though the summer tourism season has ended, Door County remains a popular place to travel.
Jon Jarosh with Destination Door County says about 30% of annual tourists come during the fall season.
“With the fall season we do tend to see fewer families since school is back in session, but we see more couples and groups without children,” said Jarosh.
The fall season brings in plenty of visitors from across the state, as well as visitors from Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa who come for the fall activities, food, and of course fall colors.
“The fall colors are just starting to show off right now,” said Jarosh. “It’ll be at peak probably this coming weekend and within the next few weeks.”
Destination Door County’s website has a Fall Report which features a map detailing how the colors are progressing in each area of the county.
“We collect the data; we have staff that are out and about almost on a daily basis seeing where things are at up and down the peninsula,” said Jarosh. “We want to make sure we are as accurate as we can be.”
Typically, the northern areas are the first to see the seasonal change.
While the fall weather is sure to give you goosebumps, so are some of the spooky offerings within the county.
“We’re named after a body of water called ‘death’s door,’ so we certainly have some experience there,” said Jarosh with a laugh.
Unique to Door County is the Trolley of the Doomed Door County Ghost Tour, where tourists hear stories of sunken ships, haunted lighthouses, and mysterious happenings that are said to still haunt the area.
Jarosh says hotels rooms are hard to come by these next few weekends, and recommends that travelers make lodging reservations in advance of their trip.
