GREENLEAF, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Parents at Zion Lutheran School Wayside in Brown County are calling for more transparency, saying they weren’t notified about alleged threats made by a student until 16 days after it happened.
“I obviously found out about this incident much later than I would have liked to,” said parent Jackie Baumgart.
“As a parent, I want to know what’s happening in our schools right away if it’s something that concerns my child,” said Nicole Klug, another parent.
“We received an email saying there was some type of an incident at the school, only to find out later that the incident occurred over two weeks ago,” said parent Matt Klug.
According to a police report, the Zion Lutheran School Wayside principal was notified of the alleged threats on Sept. 18.
However, the police report was for a welfare check four days later on Sept. 22. Parents say they weren’t notified until Oct. 4.
“These are matters that require action measured in hours, not days,” Matt Klug said.
Parents say they’re trying to work with the school board and just want to protect the kids in their schools and in their community.
“I think we just really want to focus on how do we move from here. We want it to be uniform, and we want to work together with the administration. We don’t want it to be he versus them,” said Nicole.
“We just want everybody to know that we want to work together. We really don’t want to work against the school and the school board,” said Baumgart.
Parents say the administration did offer an apology about how the situation was handled, and that they and others are hopeful they can move forward together as a community.
The school board is expected to meet privately to discuss steps moving forward and say they will reach back out to the parents.
