APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — We all know that football history runs deep in Green Bay, but it’s also an important part of Appleton’s history.
The Appleton Historical Society is showing off pieces of local history as part of a series of exhibits highlighting the history of sports in the city.
Carol Jansen is on the team of people who is bringing the exhibits to life, and helped curate the football exhibit.
“The goal of the team was to bring the memorabilia, pictures, and feature all the sports and football teams in Appleton, to share the history of football on a national scale, and also how Appleton’s football is celebrated today,” she says.
Jansen says that football was first played in Appleton in 1893.
“We feature the coaches, we feature the teams, we have individuals that we have featured, and a timeline.,” Jansen says of the exhibit.
On display are artifacts that were kindly loaned by friends, family and community members with ties to the earlier days of the sport in the city.
“We’re especially proud of featuring four individual athletes that can show the community that beyond football, they have achieved so many other things, and what football can bring to individual players.”
One of the things Jansen is most proud of is the display of football helmets from over the years. Visitors can learn about the importance of safety in the sport and how it has changed and evolved over the years.
Before the football exhibit was the history of basketball exhibit, and up next will be the history of baseball exhibit.
