MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Menasha Police Department is warning its residents and business owners about fraudulent emails that look like they come from the city, but are actually sent by scammers.
According to police, the scam emails falsely appear to come from the City of Menasha’s Community Development Department and request wire transfers for large amounts of money.
“These invoices may look professional, include the City logo, and even reference real addresses within Menasha. However, they are not legitimate and should not be paid,” police said in a news release.
One way to verify if the email is a scam is to look at its domain. Police say the scam emails use unofficial addresses such as @usa.com, while official city of Menasha emails will always come from a domain ending in @menashawi.gov.
Additionally, it’s important to remember that the city will never request payment via wire transfer. You should verify fees directly with the city, and official fee schedules are always posted online.
Andrea Oskey, network/systems administrator for the city of Menasha, said vigilance is key — and if something doesn’t seem right, be sure to pause, check and protect.
These invoices are designed to trick people into thinking they are dealing with the City. Before you pay anything, take a moment to verify the sender’s email address and payment instructions. If something looks off, stop and call us directly.
If you believe you’ve received a fraudulent invoice, contact the Menasha Police Department at (920) 967-3500.
