DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Organizers of a Northeast Wisconsin Pride festival have decided to postpone this year’s event due to “the increasingly charged political climate.”
The two-day N.E.W. Pride Festival was set to begin Friday at the Brown County Fairgrounds in De Pere but with just days before its start, it was postponed Tuesday.
Organizers wrote in part:
Pride is more than a celebration; it is a movement rooted in the fight for equality and safety. For many in our community, this event is one of the few times they can gather openly and feel affirmed in their identity. Because our Pride is one of the few that takes place in September, it can draw heightened attention during a time of increased tension. We have a responsibility to ensure our space remains safe and welcoming and empowering for everyone.
The event aims to create opportunities for community connection and raising visibility and awareness of LGBTQ+ issues.
The N.E.W. Pride Festival was scheduled to have live music, drag performances, community resources, family-friendly activities, vendors and food trucks. Friday night events were for those 21 and older, while Saturday was open to those of all ages.
Organizers say they will share updates as they determine a new date and venue.
