OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Oshkosh Police Department is investigating an incident involving juveniles displaying a handgun near Oshkosh West High School.
At 11:40 a.m. Friday, officers were called to the Skate Park at 1570 Taft Ave. which is located across from Oshkosh West. The school was placed in a secure status while officers investigated.
Officers quickly determined it wasn’t a real firearm. A BB gun/facsimile was recovered and four juveniles are being referred on criminal charges.
Facsimile or replica handguns can be easily mistaken for real firearms by law enforcement and the general public due to their realistic appearance. This can quickly escalate situations and lead to potentially tragic outcomes during disturbances. Oshkosh Police strongly encourage parents to be aware of the risks associated with their children having facsimile weapons.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Oshkosh Police at (920) 236-5700. If you have information but want to remain anonymous, you can contact the Winnebago County Crime Stoppers at (920) 231-8477.
